Truck accidents have doubled on Estonian roads since last winter

03.03.2011

There were twice as many accidents involving trucks on Estonian roads in december 2010 compared to december 2009. The number of accidents raised 36 percent - to 1953 accidents in 2010. Based on that statistics, Estonian Transport and Road Workers' Trade Union demands the ministry to forcefully step in.

The trade union also sent a letter with the concerns and suggestions to raise safety on Estonian roads to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications.

"The analysis done by the trade union show that in summer the number of accidents has fallen but in winter it has risen catastrophically," said the head of trade union's drivers section Sulev Paglant. Trade union finds that the main causes of the accidents are bad tyres and drivers' lack of experience.

The other reason is the abnormal situation on Estonian transport market where almost all the companies are violating safety regulations in order to keep up in the competition.
